It may be hard to believe, but the carpenter has the most important role in a bathroom repair or remodeling job.

  • In addition to the responsibility of all demolition of the old bathroom and framing of the new one, the carpenter works in conjunction with, and acts as the coordinator for, all other aspects of the job, from hanging sheetrock to laying tile to installing the plumbing, fixtures and cabinetry.

  • As in any project, not just bathrooms, the framer / carpenter has to know a little about all other trades (electricians, plumbers, heating/ac, trim carpentry, etc.) involved in the job to make sure that his products are working properly with the rest of the trades and their products.

Bathroom Carpentry: Like Putting Ten Gallons of Water into a Five Gallon Bucket

Many bathrooms have limited floor space; it can be difficult  for a standard framing team to get into the space and work efficiently.

  • One or two people is about all that can fit to get the job done, which makes the need for qualified workers all the more essential.

  • At times, a bathroom has been so small that we have had to cut cast iron bathtubs in half inside the bathroom before we could remove them.

New bathroom fixture Installations can also be difficult in confined areas.

  • Doors may need to be removed to get new hardware inside.

  • As new fixtures are installed, the carpenter has to work closely with the plumber to get the new tub or shower set in place correctly to ensure a proper fit.

Bathroom Carpentry: One Worker, Many Jobs

And since bathrooms are usually a small, one or two person  project, the carpenter may perform tasks that might be done by other workers on a larger job. According to owner Shane Geberin, "Bathrooms are one of my favorite things to work on. Once the demolition is complete, I get a chance to exercise my abilities a bit more than on my normal activities."

Among other things, the carpenter on a small bathroom project may:

  • Hang the drywall

  • Install medicine cabinet, and hang other cabinets

  • Set up for, and install, countertops

  • Lay floor or wall tile

  • Relocate power outlets or lighting fixtures
