Basically, to be blunt, a garage is a garage. It is usually about as basic a structure as possible, with little or no insulation, unfinished walls, concrete floors, etc.

  • Garage needs to be 24 ft. in length to fit a car into it and get the door down properly.

  • A two-car garage door needs to be 16 feet in width to get two cars parked side-by-side.

  • The header needs to be of sufficient size and strength to adequately support the free-standing opening, whether it’s for a one, two or three car garage.

  • Depending what’s above it, that header can either be a double wood 2x12, or a double (2x14) LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber,) a man-made, engineered lumber product that has allowed builders to span greater openings, to make larger open spaces without midline supporting walls.
