The Home Group has worked in the Construction industry since 1985. While custom framing of large homes is our mainstay business, for almost 25 years we have gained experience in all aspects of structural woodworking, from interior trim to exterior trim to outdoor decks and pole barns. Basically, if it’s done with wood, we do it!

Avoid the Pitfalls of Substandard Workmanship

Framers typically have a bad reputation set against them right from the start.

  • Many unqualified people will represent themselves as a framer or a carpenter that don’t really have the skills needed.

  • Many of these so-called "framers" are inexperienced and under-qualified to perform the job properly.

It’s very easy for someone to qualify themselves as a framer. All it takes is a saw, a hammer and some nails.

  • Unfortunately, Indiana has no certification program or licensing requirements for framers

  • There are no guarantees on the quality of the workmanship provided.

  • Sub-standard framers are most often sub-contractors hired by a "price-shopping" general contractor, based solely on the lowest bid.

    • You end up getting what the contractor (didn't) pay for.

    • Materials get wasted

    • Frames get put together wrong, out of square, out of plumb

    • Deadlines are not met in a timely fashion

    • These fly-by-night operations are generally not concerned with safety

    • Unqualified framers often do not have the insurance needed to protect their business, their employees, and their customers from unforeseen accidents or acts of nature.

Unfortunately, consumers have encountered this type of poor workmanship so often that it has become difficult for reputable, experienced craftsmen to overcome this negative impression.

Select Qualified Craftsmen to Ensure High-Quality Craftsmanship

So, how can you choose a qualified framer and avoid the pitfalls of poor workmanship?

The best answer is to carefully interview and question prospective framers.

Ask for references, and to see examples of their work.

As you examine their previous jobs, carefully examine the work performed based on a criteria that a licensing program for framers would establish to differentiate between a qualified and unqualified framer.

A qualified framer should easily answer questions about their work. For example:

  1. What sizes and types of materials are best to hold up a building of the type under discussion?

  2. Nail Pattern:

    • Type and size of nail used

    • Spacing

    • Placement

  3. Workplace Safety - things to consider include:

    • Employee injuries - how many lost workdays due to injury over the last year?

    • Heights – do they use harnesses and safety gear, when possible?

    • Heavy lumber and material handling - do they have the proper equipment to handle the materials being used?

    • Accident Prevention - are openings, such as a basement area, which could lead to a fall, carefully indicated? Are safety barriers utilized?

    • Tools and machinery - are inspections held to determine if equipment is up to standards and working properly? Is maintenance and inspection scheduled on a regular basis?

  4. Proper pacing – are enough workers employed to complete the project on time without cutting corners?
