In recent  years, decks are no longer just a 14 ft square space with a handrail around it and small set of steps going off one side, but have become valuable additions to a home's living space. Homeowners understand that, with the advent of new building materials and high-end outdoor entertainment equipment, a lot more can be done with them than ever before.

A well-designed deck will become a family gathering place that should have as much attention as other areas of the home. It can be a primary entertainment area of the home; family and friends will visit and spend extended periods of time there.

  • The focus on today's deck is to give it an organic feel, as if it just grew there, as opposed to a look like it was an afterthought just added last week.

  • One of the most important considerations when building a new deck is to understand what the space is going to be used for, and to create detail and architectural focal points to accent those uses, such as adding a pergola or a semi-privacy fence.

  • New building materials can keep decks looking great for many years to come, so it is important to keep in mind that the way we originally build the deck is the way it will look for the rest of its life.

Talk to Us and Get the Deck You've Always Wanted

Before we begin to design and build a new deck, we first consult with the homeowners to determine what they plan to use the space for:

  • Is it just going to be a raised patio, or will they want to add a grill, a wet bar, or maybe an outdoor TV?

  • Do we need to incorporate safety features to keep children safely enclosed?

  • Is it important to the homeowners to bring the landscape into the space?

  • Will the deck be low enough that we could replace railing with
    small benches for seating
    ?

  • What about stairs, large or small?

"I’m a big fan of a large set of stairs," says Home Group owner Shane Geberin. "Imagine trying to maneuver a grill up a three foot wide staircase. I like to flair the stairs out; start at five feet wide at the top, and flair them out to maybe seven feet at the bottom."

  • How about some lighting fixtures? Or outdoor heaters?

  • Do they some planters to add some greenery to the deck?

  • And probably the most important question: What materials will be used to construct the deck?

New Composite Building Materials: Create Decks that Last a Lifetime

There are many new building products available that can keep a deck in top shape for decades to come. While we still use treated lumber to build the lower framework, the deck boards themselves, the skirting that covers the framing on the exterior, the handrails, and all the visible components can be upgraded to a versatile composite material.

Composites are a PVC or PVC/Wood Fiber product, available in many colors that won’t chip, peel or fade. While these composites are more expensive initially, they:

  • Will last virtually forever

  • Never need to be painted or stained

  • Are weather-resistant and never need to be weather-treated

Composites are great products that have added endless possibilities to the creative uses a deck can be used for.
